What is Tarot ...
The origin of the TAROT cards are veiled in the mists of mystery, controversy or simply sheer fascination.
It is widely believed that they originated in Egypt and were developed by masons as a means for their metaphysical and transformational purpose.
Now a days it is used by many among us as a means of Cartomancy. Some believe it to be similar to ordinary playing cards, but there is striking difference.
Basic Comparison
Most of us are familiar with an ordinary pack of playing cards. Hence I shall use it to describe a deck (not to be referred as a pack) TAROT cards and with reference to this article I shall also include he divinatory significance of the ordinary playing cards. I use both TAROT and ordinary cards for divination purpose. I have found a striking similarity that is each of he suit of a ordinary card can be referred to a suit of TAROT cards and they more or less have the same meaning and of course the characteristic difference.
A basic comparison can be done as follows
| Ordinary Cards | TAROT cards | Divinatory Significance | |
| Reffered as | Pack of cards | Deck of cards | No divinatory significance |
| Suits | Suit of Clubs | Suit of Wands | Intellect, thinking, judgment, decision, analysis |
| -do- | Suit of Hearts | Suit of Cups | Emotions, affections, worldly attachments, desire, abstract thinking |
| -do- | Suit of Spades | Suit of Swords | Energy, effort, action, strife |
| -do- | Suit of Dimonds | Suit of Pentacles/ Disks | Money, wealth, materialistic aspects, possessions |
| Numbered cards | Cards are numbered 1 to 10 | -ditto- | Various aspects and their menaings |
| Court cards | King, Queen, Jack or Knave | King, Queen, Knight, Page | Describes a person or a personality or other aspect in terms of personality or impact |
| Major cards | None | 22 Cards from the major arcana | Refer below |
Apart from the comparison above, there is a major difference other than the fact that ordinary playing cards are mainly used for games and rarely for divination, is the addition of the Knight in the court cards.
An ordinary playing cards can be divided into two categories court cards and the numbered cards. TAROT how ever has a higher classification. The Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana.
In addition to the court cards (which has a Knight) and the numbered cards there are twenty two other cards, which are considered to have a greater significance in terms of impact and intensity in terms of divination.
These twenty two (other cards) has no relation to any other similarity discussed above. They are different! They are a glimpse of a profound occult lore of ancient Egypt summarized in these twenty two cards. They form the Major Arcana.
The court cards and the numbered cards form the Minor Arcana of the TAROT deck.
