Oh! my coat ...
They say it was an act of good deed ...
I wrote this long back but I guess this is a very good idea to publish this on this web site.
When I got out of the "Banquet hall" it was raining! I was delighted as it was the new year's eve and it appears that nature had its unique cool way of waving the year 2003 good-bye and moistening the way for the new year to usher in.
The sky had skilfully deceived my calculations about the weather, and the climate seemed to chuckle at the fact that I did not carry an umbrella; but how ever my friend Ms. Kay did. I guess female instincts and intuitions are stronger. Although our little candle light dinner was over because the "Banquet Hall" was closing for the day but I and Kay decided to take a walk down the street under the sole umbrella that we had.... it was cozy and blissful.... together.

The breeze seemed to play a romantic solfa for the two of us and the little drizzle added to the mood!
Then came the crescendo.... the gentle drizzle turned into a heavy down pour. Suddenly our cozy little umbrella was too small to cover both of us. We decided to take shelter under an awning of a shop in the street.
There were other people there too, washed away by the rain. What caught my attention was a lonely maiden -perhaps in her mid twenties- drenched and shivering wet! It was a pity, she too miscalculated the weather.
For a while I found myself completely absorbed with thoughts that revolved around the girl who stood soaking wet. How was she supposed to go home? Who was he? Is there anybody around, perhaps a boy friend to help her out?
Kay seemed to have gotten the whiff of my thoughts. So I told her whatever was going on in my mind. She offered to talk to her. We learnt that indeed she came to celebrate the new year's eve along with her boy friend, but unlike our little evening she had a an unpleasant time. She told us, she had just broken up with her boy friend and broke down in to sobs and sniffles. We asked no more questions. She was still shivering and the wind had picked up. If she was left in that state for a few more minutes, she was sure to catch a cold. So out of my 'generous' instincts, I handed over my coat, after removing all the important things it contained, " This will keep you warm", I said, "I have left a visiting card in the pocket. You can return the coat to me when you get home".
Kay did not have the slightest idea that I would such "generous" thing out of kindness and compassion.
It was an expensive coat meant for special occasions. Through the corner of my eye, I noticed that Kay was looking at me with a bewildered expression. Did she mean "Are you nuts?" or "what's has come over with you?"; I could not figure out.
It is hard to explain .... but I believe it must have been a combination of the two phrases and this was something she did not approve of.
But the smile on the other girl's face still lingers in my mind.
I looked at the watch it was January 1st, 2004. The moment of my first good deed of the year...
Good deed?? Yes it was a good deed indeed!
Today is January 24th 2004 (at the time of writing).
There has been NO call from that girl, not even a thank you! It was an expensive coat Now I know for sure, female intuition is stronger than men... I have not told Kay about this(at the time of writing). She will surely come to know about this when she visits my website and she is bound to be mad at me. Now I am sure what her expressions meant at that moment. It was "ARE YOU NUTS???" and all capitals!!!
